Red, White, & Blue 4th of July Dessert Poppers

Red white and blue strawberry poppers and marshmallows
Hello Friends,

Tomorrow as we celebrate America's birthday, some of us are in the kitchen finishing up last minute dessert for all the family members that will be telling stories around grilled barbecue chicken, diced fruits, and soda pops.

So, I'll make your life a little easier (well I'll make the cooking part easier). Here is a simple AND quick dessert idea that will impress and delight your family and guests.

  • Strawberries
  • Chocolate melts (both white and milk)
  • Marshmallows
  • Sprinkles
  • Decorative straws
  • Dessert bags
  • Bowl
  • Small pot
  • Wax paper

preparing strawberry for dipping

I prepared my area before beginning. Now I have to admit that I brought this fancy sticky-thing to help me with dipping the strawberries and I ended up using my hands. It's easier to control the dipping and plus the strawberry kept slipping off.

how to melt white chocolate

In a pot add half of cup of water and let it come to boil and lower the heat to low. Look for a large bowl that will rest in the pot without actually touching the water. The hot steam is what is really melting the chocolate not the actual water.

*HINT* I learned this the hard way, white chocolate MELTS & SEIZE quick. So, melt half of the chocolate and stir, remove from heat and keep stirring the already melted chocolate will melt the rest. IF YOU KEEP IT ON THE HEAT OR MELT IT ALL THE WAY THROUGH, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO WORK WITH IT. Look at the picture above, when it looks like that remove it from the heat and keep stirring. You will get a nice easy smooth texture to work with. You have to pay attention to it at all times.

Slowly dip your strawberries in white chocolate, (a little over half the strawberry) and then sprinkled with blue sprinkles (half of the white part).

*HINT*double dipped the strawberry in the white chocolate for an even thick coating. You are going to have to let the excess chocolate drip off before sprinkling.

Rest each strawberry away from each other and let it dry. If you're thinking about putting it in a freezer for a quick dry, remember the ice forming on the strawberry will eventually melt and damage your work. (Yes, I learned from experience).

how to melt milk chocolate

Melting milk chocolate is easier than white chocolate because you can repeat the steps above except you can leave it over LOW heat and work with it.

Prepare your marshmallows by cutting the straws in half and inserting in the middle of each marshmallow. BE CAREFUL, because marshmallow's texture makes it easy to lose its perfect cylinder shape. Once your chocolate is melted, dip each in chocolate and sprinkle.

DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT USE THE MICROWAVE, because it will cook your chocolate, and NEVER cook it over direct heat, again it will cook and turn your chocolate into hard chocolate chip. Trust me melting the chocolate the right way does not take time. So don't worry about running out of time.
