Seafood Boil

Anyone who knows me, knows that I love seafood. Now, I have been to a few and I have to tell you, it was the most fun that I ever had. Eating with no forks or knives, getting dirty, and it is all acceptable. On the other hand, if you are hosting a seafood boil, I have to admit, it can get expensive especially if you are planning on inviting all your family and members of your book club. This is a great end of summer party before we get enthralled in the work-school day in and day out routine. A seafood boil is a dinner party in which family and friends throw all etiquette out the door and enjoy tons of boiled seafood under the skies.

Before you start, make sure you have a great pot, just like the one below from Homegoods. Super cute and at just $40 makes the perfect accessory to your evening. Go from stove top to table top.

Seafood boil pot

There are many ways to prep your boil, in the kitchen or in the backyard on a grill all will work. Most importantly find a great source for your fresh seafood. Like I said before seafood boil can get very expensive. Here is a list of wholesale seafood that you can contact:

Royal Seafood Miami
The Fresh Lobster Company
Always Fresh Seafood

The corn, sausage, potoatoes and other ingredients you can get from your local BJs or Cosco. Boils don't have to be just shrimp or crawfish (which I'm not a fan as of yet). You have a crab boils, lobster boils, even a claim or mussel boils. As far as seasoning, there are specific seasons made for boils, but like I always said, GO WITH YOUR OWN FLAVOR AND TASTE. Some of the most popular seasonings are from Zatarins or Old Bay, but I'm sure there are plenty more out there.

Decorating is the simplest part of the party. It's simple and minimal. Rent couple of long tables and chairs, cheap plastic covers, and for added ambiance old newspapers (so save them from now.) Roll of paper towels. Seafood tools like lobster cracks, serving tongs, mesh skimmers, mallets, small serving bowls for butter, hot sauce, lime slices and other condiments. Of course, you need something to drink, beers, iced teas, ice cold lemonades will be just fine.

Seafood boil with crabs, corn, potatoes
Classic Seafood Boil by Mom Favorites

  • Amounts will vary by type of seafood and size of pot. The best assortment contains:
  • Clams
  • Shrimp
  • Crab Legs
  • Smoked Sausage
  • Corn (on the cob)
  • Red Potatoes
  • Old Bay
  • Fixings: cocktail sauce, hot sauce, lemon, butter, salt & pepper

  • Prep seafood ingredients as necessary (leave shells on shrimp, though!). Slice sausage in 3 inch chunks, half large potatoes, and cut corn in half.
  • Fill bottom of pot (just until it almost reaches the insert) with water.
  • Put in first layer of ingredients (whatever takes the longest to cook). In our case we added potatoes, a sprinkle of Old Bay, sausage, a sprinkle of Old Bay, and then corn with a sprinkle of Old Bay. Once the water comes to a boil, we cooked it for 15 minutes.
  • Then we added the clams with a sprinkle of Old Bay. Once they began to open (about 8 minutes) we added the shrimp and the crab legs.
  • Once the crab legs are warmed through and the shrimp are pink, you're all done!
  • Serve with melted butter and the rest of the fixings!
  • Cooking time will have to be adjusted for the type of cook top, the size of the pot, amount of ingredients and what you have, but even though we've never quite known what to do, it's never gone wrong!
  • Just trust yourself and drink a beer. It'll turn out just fine!
