Life, Journey & Friendship

The other day, I stumbled on this article from The Everygirl. "How to Maintain a Friendship When You’re in Different Life Stages," and it was eye opening and I had to share it with you guys.  This may seem a little off topic from the blog, but it really is not. If you think about entertaining and hosting, family *and* friends are part of the celebration. As I move forward on my blogging journey, be on the look for more of these types of post along with all the pretty parties, DIY and hosting you've come to expect.

First off, we all thought those high school even college friendships would last forever, and well as some does, but a lot don't. When I left Connecticut and moved to Florida, I left all my friends behind. Then came college - made some new friends - and eventually lost touch with those two. and then there was my late 20s and 30s when there wasn't a party I didn't know about. You know those annoying club flyers that promoters would stick under your wipers, well I had dozen of those. But as I moved on moved from that stage and became a mother, even some of those friendships were "left behind," as I've made new ones, (shout to my girls, we may not talk every week, but when we get together we swap kid stories like nobodies business).
If you are one of the few to have the same high school and college friends (which by the way I've kept in touch with a few - Hi Lilian, Hi Tameria - all the others on Facebook from High School) consider yourself blessed. But I truly believe that real long lasting friendships are really made late in your 30s into your 40s. It may have something to do with the fact that at that point you really know yourself or you're learning "YOU."

With that being said, the article breaks down some simple steps on how to maintain those friendships as you moved on through your journey in life.

How to Maintain a Friendship When You’re in Different Life Stages

1. Remember what brought you together

It probably goes without saying, but remembering why you became friends in the first place goes a long way toward making your friendship last. Talking about the history you have together, like your inside jokes and past experiences, can help you feel close when you’re in different places and might not be able to see each other as often as you’d like. That’s why finding opportunities to reminisce, laugh, and even cringe about old stories and memories is so important!

2. Make time for new memories

It’s always fun to remember the past but any relationship, including a friendship, won’t last unless you set aside time to make new memories. Trying out a new activity together a great way to stay up-to-date on each other’s lives while getting in some much needed leisure time. Being spontaneous probably wont work as well as it used to, so planning ahead helps make sure that your time together doesn’t get sidelined by other commitments or responsibilities.

"Be vulnerable. Talk about your struggles, celebrate your successes, and share your hopes for the future. Authenticity will bridge the gap between your different situations in life."
