GUEST POST: Know the Risks in Outdoor Wedding Videography | Written by Helen Clark

To satisfy your clients and provide them with quality video material, you need to be aware of possible risks

There is something wonderful about outdoor weddings; the whole atmosphere seems to be more magical when you’re surrounded by nature. The sunlight is showering your skin, the light breeze is playing with your hair, and everyone is just enjoying the fresh air while sipping on their drinks.

Or it could be the very opposite of this; the wind can be too strong, messing with food and ornaments on the table, and the sun can go to either one of the extremes – not show itself or give everyone on your guest list unpleasant sunburns. Although outdoor weddings are wonderful, they are a serious risk, and especially if you’re the video editing company in charge of filming it, because it’s your job to make everything look magical no matter the actual situation.

Mind the Weather

Weather is the biggest problem here. Although there are very precise apps that can give you details about the weather every hour, it can still be unpredictable. This is why it’s necessary that you bring additional equipment designed for all weather conditions, just in case something goes wrong.

In order to determine exactly which conditions will be waiting for you on the big day, my suggestion is to collect your information from different sources. Therefore, install not just one app, but several of them and make sure to contact the local meteorological station because they will be able to give you even more details.

Be Extra Careful about Your Equipment

To satisfy your clients and provide them with quality video material, you need to be aware of possible risks

Indoor weddings have highly controlled conditions, and not a lot of your attention should be dedicated to looking out for your equipment. However, it's the exact opposite when you're outdoors, and especially so if your wedding gig is taking place near water. Keeps a close eye on everything going on around you so that your equipment doesn't get damaged, along with the video material you have been working on?

Back Up Your Lighting
Sunlight can be either your friend or your foe, and you shouldn't rely on it for one second. And, this isn't the only problematic thing – outdoor weddings don't have powerful night lighting. All lights are usually dimmed to create a romantic atmosphere which will be an issue for you.

For you to be able to create quality material that will be satisfactory for the happy couple, it’s necessary to have backup lighting.

Unexpected Visitors
To satisfy your clients and provide them with quality video material, you need to be aware of possible risks

And I don't mean just people when I say unexpected visitors – being surrounded by nature usually comes with insects and perhaps even birds and small reptiles, depending on your location. There is not much you can do to prevent these guests from crashing the wedding, but you can do your best to remove them from the venue and the videos.

Be Prepared for Anything

Which brings me to my next point – an experienced videographer is ready for everything, and that includes sunburns and mosquitos. An obvious solution for these two potential issues is having sunscreen with you and a cream that repels bugs, but being prepared for everything is more a state of mind. Therefore, your mindset should be all about problem-solving and dealing with any situation that may occur.

Outdoor wedding videography isn't at all a simple profession. However, the thing is that it all may just go smoothly, without any disturbances, but in order to be confident that you can deliver a high-quality product to your clients, you need to be ready for everything.
